A Few Biologically Inspired Security Mechanisms
نویسنده
چکیده
Biology has been a rich source of terminology for computer security, especially in the area of malware analysis and defense. However, many computer security professionals lack in-depth knowledge on these underlying biological mechanisms and thus have difficulties in making a smooth transition between biological phenomena and their application in computer security. As a result the security mechanisms developed by nature have yet to be fully utilized in the arena of digital attacks and defenses. In this paper we introduce a few biological security mechanisms, such as the cryptographic and steganographic processing of biological information expressed in DNA, RNA, and protein sequences, the defensive actions against invading pathogens conducted by biological immune system, and the improved survivability of a species through bio-diversity, to the practitioners working in the field of information security. The intentions are two folds: (1) To build computer systems with built-in/inherent security mechanisms, unlike the common practice today – security is an adds-on feature; (2) To seek new security paradigms from the most recent developments in biology. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the subject, it is necessary to encourage researchers from both computer science and biology to participate to achieve the goals.

Immunology, diversity, and homeostasis: The past and future of biologically inspired computer defenses
While biological metaphors have a long history of use in computer security, they have been more successful in describing malicious software than in helping create better defenses. Immune system mechanisms, diversity, and homeostasis have helped inspire the development of promising computer security technologies. To fulfill the promise of biologically-inspired security, however, more work is nee...
متن کاملBiologically Inspired Execution Framework for Vulnerable Workflow Systems
The main objective of the research is to introduce a biologically inspired execution framework for workflow systems under threat due to some intrusion attack. Usually vulnerable systems need to be stop and put into wait state, hence to insure the data security and privacy while being recovered. This research ensures the availability of services and data to the end user by keeping the data secur...
متن کاملSelf-Organising Maps in Computer Security
Some argue that biologically inspired algorithms are the future of solving difficult problems in computer science. Others strongly believe that the future lies in the exploration of mathematical foundations of problems at hand. The field of computer security tends to accept the latter view as a more appropriate approach due to its more workable validation and verification possibilities. The lac...
متن کاملBiologically-Inspired Concepts for Autonomic Self-protection in Multiagent Systems
Biologically-inspired autonomous and autonomic systems (AAS) are essentially concerned with creating self-directed and self-managing systems based on metaphors from nature and the human body, such as the autonomic nervous system. Agent technologies have been identified as a key enabler for engineering autonomy and autonomicity in systems, both in terms of retrofitting into legacy systems and in...
متن کاملEmergence of Cooperation: State of the Art
This review presents a review of prevalent results within research pertaining to emergent cooperation in biologically inspired artificial social systems. Results reviewed maintain particular reference to biologically inspired design principles, given that current mathematical and empirical tools have provided only a partial insight into elucidating mechanisms responsible for emergent cooperatio...
